I hope you are all enjoying your summer and had a chance to watch some of the Olympics.
On some of the athletes (such as Kerri Walsh in Beach Volleyball) you may have noticed some taping. The tape seen is Kinesio Tape, which I am certified to use having taken 3 courses on its use this past year. I use it primarily to treat overuse injuries, such as ITB Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles & calf issues, as
well as chronic hamstring insertion pain.
The tape is lightweight & stretchable. I usually apply the tape over and around muscles to assist in relaxing them. The skin under the tape is lifted to allow for movement of blood and lymph, and therefore helping the healing process.
For more info check out www.kinesiotaping.com (“Kinesio at the Olympics” gives you some cool pics).
I have found it an extremely useful tool that allows for athletes to continue training (since it reduces/eliminates pain felt during activity) while at the same time allowing the muscle/fascia to heal. Taping is usually done at the end of a massage appointment if it is needed.
Cost is an additional $5-10, depending on how much tape is used, added on to the cost of the massage. The tape is left on for 3-4 days. Shorter follow-up appointments can be made if tape reapplication is required.
Enjoy this last week of August. Hope you are all staying as healthy and injury free as possible.
Thanks!! Julia
